The lead sentence of some news stories tell us scores about our society’s priorities. See the Associated Press’ story today Man crushed by falling rock in Kermit:
KERMIT, W.Va. — A train tunnel where a machine operator was killed is expected reopen soon. Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman says at least 19 freight trains were parked in Roanoke, Va., Portsmouth, Ohio, and other rail yards after the Thursday morning accident. Two others were rerouted after an excavator operator was crushed by tons of falling rock earlier in the day. Chapman says the tunnel should reopen by 9 p.m. The victim’s name has not been released, but Sue Barazi with the Charleston office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration says he worked for Johnson Western Gunite Construction. Chapman says crews were working to raise the tunnel’s roof to accommodate double-stacked rail cars.
