President Obama has just announced his intent to nominate our own David Michaels to be Assistant Secretary for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Congratulations, David! All of us at George Washington University and The Pump Handle will miss working with you, but our loss is the country’s gain. U.S. workers can look forward to an OSHA dedicated to realizing the vision of safe and healthy workplaces for all.

What a fabulous choice Pres. Obama has made! I know of no one more able to lead OSHA in a positive new direction. I’m sure all Pump Handle readers join in congratulating David Michaels and wish him well in this important new job.

David- I hope you and Jordan are able to get appropriations for OSHA to blog and lecture/podcast (and reach ethnic media) so you can keep motivating the tech-savvy (doesn’t=young) and up-and-coming H+S professionals and employers. Godspeed!

I’m with you and available to assist lol! We had a discussion with an NLRB Regional Director yesterday about how they’re finally streamlining their databasing and turning the agency into 2009 and I KNOW Jordan and David are waaaay more open to it than those old NLRB artifacts! Remember, New media operations are cheap and the corporate blame-the-worker safety culture hasn’t REALLY started to take it over yet! Make sure the good guys get there first;)

I agree with Bryn. I am so proud to have my professor and advisor head OSHA! Those of us who know him as students and colleagues know there couldn’t be a better pick for this position.
Liz, I don’t quite understand how this nomination/confirmation process works. How sure are we of his confirmation? What should we expect?
Thanks.

Right now, Obama has only announced his intent to nominate David. Once he officially nominates him, then it’ll be up to the Senate to confirm him. There will probably be hearings, and then they’ll vote.
The Washington Post keeps a tally of how many nominees are at various stages of the process:

And of course, you’ll probably hear something from us when it’s David’s turn to go before the Senate …
